Frequently Asked Questions About Glad Plastic Wraps

Glad Press'n Seal

How is Glad Press'n Seal different from other plastic wraps? Glad Press'n Seal combines many benefits of today's wraps, foils, and food storage bags and containers. It goes where no wrap has ever been. While other wraps cling, Glad Press'n Seal wrap actually seals to surfaces including plastic, paper, wood, metal, Styrofoam containers and glass. It's the first sealable plastic wrap.

How does Glad Press'n Seal wrap help prevent freezer burn? Freezer burn occurs when food loses its moisture to surrounding air. When air reaches the surface of food, it dries it out. Glad Press'n Seal wrap help seal out cold freezer air to protect against freezer burn.

What gives Glad Press'n Seal wrap its sealing qualities? It uses Griptex, a proprietary gripping technology. Think of the textured surface of Glad Press'n Seal wrap as having thousands of tiny hills and valleys. Only when you apply pressure do the valleys seal to the desired location.

How is Glad Press'n Seal Freezer wrap different from regular Press'n Seal wrap? Glad Press'n Seal Freezer wrap is 40% thicker than regular Press'n Seal wrap. In addition, the wrap has a light blue color and has graphics on the wrap to make it easy to label foods before storage. Different than aluminum foil, you can see through Press'n Seal Freezer wrap, making it easier to see exactly what food you are removing from the freezer.

Can Glad Press'n Seal wrap be recycled? Like other plastic wraps, Glad Press'n Seal wrap is not recyclable.

What is the environmental profile of Glad Press'n Seal sealable wrap? In general, plastic wraps are not recyclable. However, because you don't have to use as much Glad Press'n Seal wrap to create a seal, you should create less garbage.

What happens to the seal? Does it remain on the food? The sealing actually works with the help of the primary ingredients typically found in chewing gum — an old idea now applied to wrap! These ingredients have been approved by the FDA for over thirty-five years and are frequently used for labels found on fruits and vegetables. According to the FDA, small amounts of such ingredients in food do not pose any health risk.

In the past, there has been concern about particles from the plastics migrating to food when heated for cooking. Can this migration happen with Glad Press'n Seal wrap? If so, isn't it harmful? The concern over heating plastics and migration stems from the use of chemical additives (known as plasticizers) in plastics made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Glad does not use any PVC plastics in its products. Glad wraps are safe to use in the microwave.

Glad Cling Wrap

What type of plastic is used to make Glad Cling Wrap? Glad Cling Wrap is made of 100% crystal clear polyethylene.

Does Glad Cling Wrap contain plasticizers? Glad Cling Wrap contains no plasticizers. It consists of a high molecular weight polyethylene resin; it does not contain any substance that could be related to estrogens or estrogen mimics. The only additives are proprietary cling agents used at low concentrations which are FDA compliant.

Is it okay to use Glad Cling Wrap when reheating food in a conventional oven? No, Glad Cling Wrap, like all plastic wraps, is not suitable to use in conventional ovens.

Is it okay to use Glad Cling Wrap when reheating food in a microwave oven? Glad Cling Wrap has been tested extensively for microwave cooking. The product is an excellent moisture barrier when used as a cover for casseroles. It also promotes uniform cooking and prevents splattering.

As a result of its molecular structure, however, Glad Cling Wrap has a tendency to tighten during the cooking process. This can cause the wrap to split. To reduce the chance of such occurrences we recommend that consumers vent the cover at a corner or side of the dish. This will allow a small amount of steam to escape.

Glad Cling Wrap is not heated by microwave energy, but it will become heated by contact with extremely hot foods. Normally, foods in a microwave oven do not become hot enough to bring the wrap to its melting point. However, certain foods with high fat content (such as butter or bacon) or with high sugar content can become very hot in a microwave oven and should not come in contact with our wrap. If you wish to use our wrap when heating such foods, we recommend that at least an inch of air space be left between the food and the wrap covering the dish.

What is the thickness of Glad Cling Wrap? Glad Cling Wrap is .5 mils thick.

Is it okay to freeze foods that are stored in Glad Cling Wrap? Yes. To maximize food freshness, it is recommended that you wrap meats, chicken and fish tightly with Glad Cling Wrap to create a barrier against air that causes freezer burn. To ensure a long food freshness, you should place wrapped meats in Glad Double Lock Zipper Food Storage or Zipper Freezer Bags.
