Portmeirion TalismanDue to high production costs, patterns such as 'Malachite' and 'Moss Agate' had restricted sales, so Susan Williams-Ellis continued to investigate alternative ways of creating decoration. Silk screen printing for transfers was just beginning and she realized that it could give the bodily look she wanted. 'Talisman' was designed to overcome almost any fault in the printing. The pattern is made of two strong abstract black shapes over printed with blocks of color with plenty of gaps to hide failures of register and even breaks in the print. Despite this, the design is full of force and has a life of it's own as Susan's name, 'Talisman' indicates. A greatly enlarged version was produced some ten years later as a most impressed furnishing material.
