Setting the Table: Glassware
Riedel Vinum Extreme
Vinum Extreme, made of over 24 percent lead crystal, is the latest development
in the machine-made "Gourmet Glass Concept," which was first launched in 1986. The inspiration for
this development was the steady improvement in wine quality and the discovery of the positive health
effects of moderate wine consumption caused a wine boom during the '90s. As wines become more dense
and more concentrated, they call for the development of new shapes. This glass range reflects the
progress that has been made in the quality of machine production. Glasses in the Vinum Extreme series
are sold in sets of four or six.
Riedel crystal is used by fine restaurants all over the world and thus must stand
up to frequent trips through a dishwasher. But because lead crystal has a soft, coarse surface to
convey intense aromas, Riedel recommends the glasses be hand washed.

Cabernet/Merlot Wine Glass Set of Two — Oversized and
extra-tall, each standing 9-3/4 inches tall and holding a whopping
30-3/8 ounces at full capacity, the two Vinum Extreme glasses in this
set are designed especially to give Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot plenty
of breathing surface. At the same time, the modern diamond shape looks
distinctly snazzier than typical wine stems. |
 |
Chardonnay Wine Glass Set of Two — The glasses in this set of four are
specifically recommended to enhance the taste of wines such as Chardonnay, White Burgundy,
Corton-Charlemagne, Montrachet, and Meursault. The large bowl provides room for the wine's
rich bouquet to unfold without becoming too intense. Each glass stands 9-1/8 inches high
with a 4½-inch wide bowl and holds 27½ ounces of wine. |
 |
Pinot Noir/Burgundy Wine Glass Set of Two — The glasses in this set of four
were specifically shaped to highlight the fruit in full-bodied red wines with high acidity and
moderate tannin, such as Barbaresco, Barolo, Beaujolais Grand Cru, Red Burgundy, Gamay, Nebbiolo,
and Pinot Noir. The mouth of the Pinot Noir glasses draws wine to the areas of the tongue that
perceive sweetness, highlighting the fruit and mellowing the acidity. The large bowl provides room
for the wine's rich bouquet to unfold. Each glass stands 9½ inches high with a 4½-inch wide bowl
and holds 29-5/8 ounces of wine. |
 |
Prosecco Glass Set of Six — Crafted in the modern diamond
shape of Riedel's Vinum Extreme line, this glass highlights the
refreshing, bubbly characteristics of Prosecco, Italy's popular
sparkling white wine. Beautifully balanced and with just the right
mixture of delicacy and stability, the glass set makes a handsome gift
or adds to an existing collection for the budding oenophile. Each
long-stemmed Prosecco glass stands 8¾ inches tall and holds nearly 11
ounces at full capacity. While dishwasher-safe, Vinum Extreme crystal is
best washed by hand to prevent detergent residue that can affect wine
taste. Also available in a Set of Two. |
 |
Sauvignon Blanc Wine Glass Set of Six — The glasses in this set of six were
specifically shaped to highlight the fruit in medium-bodied white wines such as white Bordeaux,
Gewürztraminer, Hermitage Blanc, Marsanne, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon-Semillon,
and Viognier. The glasses enhance the taste by balancing the intensity of flavors and offering a
smooth finish, plus they contribute to the wine's perfect display. Each glass stands 9½ inches high
with a 3½-inch wide bowl and holds 16-7/8 ounces of wine. |
 |
Martini Cocktail Glass Set of Four — The four graceful, 7-ounce glasses in this
set are ideal for sipping martinis and other cocktails. Like all Riedel glassware, these glasses
are designed to enhance the flavor of a particular drink. In this case, the glasses' polished rims
curve delicately inward so flavor nuances aren't lost when sipping. Machine-blown of brilliant 24
percent lead crystal, the glasses conform to Riedel's exacting standards. They're 6-7/8 inches high
and measure 4½ inches in diameter at the rim. |
 |
4-Piece Wine Tasting Set — The four large glasses in this wine-tasting set
from Riedel's Vinum Extreme series established a new standard when they were introduced.
Distinguished by their bowls' dramatically flared diamond shape, the glasses provide an
exceptionally wide evaporation surface, thereby intensifying a wine's bouquet and silky
texture. The glasses are machine-blown of 24 percent lead crystal and conform to Riedel's
exacting standards: they're colorless, transparent, and thin-walled, and their lips are cut
and polished so wine flows smoothly onto the tongue. Thus, the four glasses in this set are
ideal for tasting seven varietals: cabernet sauvignon/merlot (9¾ inches high, holds 30-3/8
ounces); pinot noir/nebbiolo (9½ inches, 29-5/8 ounces); riesling/sauvignon blanc (9½ inches,
16-7/8 ounces); and chardonnay (9-1/8 inches, 27½ ounces). |
 |
Cabernet Decanter Gift Set — The two large glasses in this set are ideal for
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and full-bodied red Bordeaux wines like Cabernet Franc. Both the
glasses and the decanter are from Riedel's Vinum Extreme series, distinguished by the diamond
shape of glasses' bowls — a shape reflected by the decanter. The glasses' shape intensifies
a wine's bouquet and enhances its silky texture. Glasses and decanter are machine-blown of 24
percent lead crystal, and the glasses conform to Riedel's exacting standards: colorless, transparent,
and thin-walled, with lips cut and polished so wine flows smoothly onto the tongue. The glasses are
9¾ inches high and hold 30-3/8 ounces. The decanter holds 37-1/8 ounces, ample for a 750-milliliter
bottle of wine, and is 9 inches high. |
 |
35¼-Ounce Decanter — This unique duck-shaped decanter has a funnel-like neck for
pouring wine in and a wide body that allows for excellent oxidation. Exposure to the air will
awaken flavors and aromas in older wines and soften astringent flavors in young wines. When wine
is oxidized, hosts can pour glasses through a narrow spout in the decanter's "tail." As with the
majority of Riedel's fine wine glasses and accessories, this elegant decanter is mouth-blown of
24-percent full lead crystal, which shows wine's natural brilliance and clarity. The decanter
stands 6-5/8 inches tall and holds 35¼ ounces, which equals one entire bottle of wine. |
 |
Wine Glass Travel Case — When you travel, take your Riedel glassware with you
safely and securely. The Riedel travel case has a double-snap hand grip, lockable zipper, and
adjustable shoulder strap. This lightweight case comfortably holds three Riedel glasses. |
