Setting the Table: Glassware
Spiegelau's Vino Grande Collection
Several years ago, an article in Wine Spectator magazine
noted the importance of a high-quality glass for improving a wine's looks and enhancing
its bouquet. However, the magazine lamented, many of the attributes that increase the
beauty and value of the glass actually obscure the wine. Spiegelau's Vino Grande series
is part of a connoisseur line designed specifically for wine lovers. The thin rim means
less distraction from the taste and texture of the wine. Tap the glass gently with your
fingernail and you'll hear the distinctive ping of fine crystal. These glasses are billed
as dishwasher-safe and are sturdy enough for everyday use, as proven by their use in
restaurants. Still, we'd recommend hand washing.
 |
Red Wine Glass Set of Six — This set of simple but elegant
crystal wine glasses would grace the simplest outdoor picnic as well as a multi-course formal
meal in the dining room. The glasses are 9 inches tall, 2½ inches across the top, 3 inches
across the wider portion of the tulip shape, and has a capacity of 15 ounces. They have very
thin stems and wide, stable bottoms that won't tip easily — a design bonus, since no one
likes trying to clean red wine out of a tablecloth. A set of these glasses would make a lovely
housewarming or wedding gift, along with a select bottle from your favorite winery. |
 |
Burgundy Wine Glass Set of Six — This glass, which measures 8½
inches high, features a wide bowl and narrow rim ideal for Burgundy wines. Like all red-wine
glasses, it should be filled only one-third of the way so the wine can be swirled to release
its full flavor. |
 |
Riesling Glass Set of Six — This slim, elegant glass measures
8 inches high, and has a capacity of 8 ounces. The graceful stem is long enough to keep the
warmth of your hand from destroying the crisp flavor of the wine, but not so long that it
unbalances the glass. |
 |
Highball Glass — This tall, narrow glass is
fit for serving everything from gin and tonics to cherry colas. Tap the glass gently
with your fingernail and you'll hear the distinctive ping of fine crystal. This glass
measures 5¾ inches high, with an elegantly tapered top, and has a capacity of 11 ounces. |
 |
Champagne Flute Set of Six — These are the champagne
flutes you'll want to have handy for every occasion or spontaneous celebration. Their
shape enhances the aromas, flavors, and sparkle of the champagne. They are durable,
dishwasher-safe, and retain their clarity well. And they're color-stable for guaranteed
brilliance. The only thing missing with these flutes is the bubbly. This glass measures
9-1/8 inches high, and has a capacity of 9 ounces. |
 |
Bordeaux Magnum Glass Set of Six — This generously
sized 22-ounce wine glass measures 9 inches high and is designed to showcase the
Bordeaux region's Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots. |
 |
Chardonnay Glass Set of Six — These are the wine glasses
you'll pull out every night for dinner, as well as on those special occasions. Their shape
enhances the aromas and flavors of any wine. This wine glass measures 8½ inches high. |
 |
Brandy/Cognac Glass Set of Six — This clear, long-stemmed
8-ounce cognac glass measures 7 inches high and is designed to be cradled so your hand warms
the cognac, releasing its bouquet. |
 |
Brandy Snifter Set of Six — This clear 19¾-ounce cognac
glass measures 6 inches high and is designed to be cradled so your hand warms the brandy,
releasing its bouquet. |
 |
Grappa Glass — Grappa is a potent, traditional
Italian after-dinner drink made from the skins and seeds of grapes that have been used for
winemaking. This 4-ounce grappa glass measures 7¾ inches high and is designed with a stem
long enough to keep your fingers from touching the bowl, but not so long as to unbalance
the glass. |
 |
1-Liter Decanter — With a visually dramatic appeal,
this 1-liter Spiegelau Vino Grande decanter brings a striking Italian élan to your
table while also helping your favorite wines breath. The decanter includes a large,
broad reservoir which rises upwards and tapers to a long, slender neck, providing
increased oxygen exposure to wine, enhancing the both the flavor and bouquet of even
the most delicious grape pressings. Graceful for a decanter of its size, it holds a
standard wine bottle with room to spare. Mouth-blown in Germany from glass free of
lead, it features great clarity coupled with durability for frequent use. |
