Spode Rhododendron

Introduced in 1942, initially for the American market, Rhododendron is a multi-centered pattern with each piece having a different rhododendron spray outline printed and hand colored. The pattern was originated by Ronald Copeland, the then Managing Director of the company who was a great horticulturist and grower of Rhododendrons on his estate at Trelissick in Cornwall, as well as at his home in Colwich, Staffordshire. He would often bring specimens into the design studio for the artists to paint and record for later application to the china. Whilst the original few species were from Trelissick, many of the later studies were taken from examples at Bodnant Garden in Wales.
