Microwave Cooking for One by Marie T SmithShopping for Decorative Dinnerware
notNeutral City PlatesThese porcelain plates measure twelve inches across, with each city’s downtown core printed on a black background. Key buildings are represented with red icons, while rivers and public spaces are shown in vivid blue and green. The plates’ designs portray a bold, graphic representation of distinctly fascinating cities. Dishwasher safe. Not recommended for use in the microwave. notNeutral City Plates Collection 1The four featured cities — Los Angeles, Shanghai, Cairo, and Berlin — were chosen by notNeutral's design team for their reputations as gateways, and for the way each is dealing with the effects of agglomeration as its population begins to reach critical mass. notNeutral City Plates Collection 2The theme of the second City Plates Collection is Culture and Capital(ism) and the chosen cities are New Orleans and Washington, D.C., both rich in history and culture, and the booming megalopolises of Las Vegas and Dubai. The notion of how cities usually arise (if antiquated) usually follows an organic model — a natural feature of the earth’s topography lends itself to the support of human existence, and provides the foundation for human progress (a bottom-up process). But in the current age of man's almost complete control of the environment, cities can be fabricated almost instantaneously (in geological terms) and at the whim of greater and greater feats of civil engineering (a top-down process.) If culture and capital are two of the products that define a successful society, what happens when they are used as preconceived notions, planned into a city rather than spontaneously resulting from the natural course of a city’s development over time? That is, how does a capital investment in manufacturing culture impact city form?
notNeutral City Plates Collection 3The third series cities, Brasilia, St. Petersburg, Melbourne and New York, are tied together in Capital Migration. Three of the new cities were at one time the seat of government; one became its nation’s capital in 1960. All remain centers of economic power, cultural leaders, and symbols of their country’s national identity.
notNeutral City Plates Collection 4The theme for this fourth collection — London, Rome, Mexico City, and Tokyo — is Empire Building and takes a look at the global impact of Empires on settlement patterns, national borders, cultural identity, and modern city form. These four ancient cities are compared at their height with their modern cityscapes today. notNeutral City Plates Collection 5The culmination of the notNeutral City Plate collection celebrates visionary thinking and takes a look at four great cities — Chicago, Paris, Montreal and Mumbai — and examines the past, present, and future of innovative architecture and design. Since the mid-19th century, the World’s Fair has been a breeding ground for innovations in architecture, civil & structural engineering, and infrastructure. Three cities who have been past World’s Fair hosts established a precedent for their time, providing some of the most memorable structures of the last few centuries. One city has yet to host a World’s Fair, but represents a future city on the cusp of a new world order, with a potential for unrivaled innovation.
