Can you tell me what specific types of plastics are best suited for making into containers for cooking in a residential microwave oven? Thank you for any help.

Rather than provide you with an inadequate answer, I defer to the experts. I suggest you contact the American Plastics Council for a definitive answer. They have a section at their website dedicated to this subject, as well as contact information for asking questions.
You can also check out the FDA Article covering the safety of plastics in the microwave.
I do know that most melamine is NOT microwave-safe.
